“Azerbaijan`s First Vice-President Mehriban Aliyeva’s initiative of planting 650,000 trees in the country in one day to mark the 650th birthday anniversary of the great Azerbaijani poet and thinker Imadeddin Nasimi will help reduce 2,6 thousand cubic meters of CO2 emissions each year,” an independent expert on climate change Maharram Mehdiyev has told AZERTAC.
“This will make also significant contribution to the climate change mitigation and environmental protection. Therefore, everyone should contribute to this noble initiative,” the expert mentioned.
Mehdiyev said that this will also be a successful step for Azerbaijan in fulfilling its obligations under the Paris Agreement of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) signed in 2015 in Paris. “One of the obligations taken by Azerbaijan under the current convention is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 35 percent until 2030. Thus, planting 650,000 trees in one day will be a worthy contribution to these obligations,” he added.
