The jury acquitted Thursday all the accused of the organization of Politkovskaya’s murder – brothers Jabrail and Ibragim Makhmudovs, ex-employee of the Interior Ministry – Sergey Hajikurbanov, and FSS officer – Pavel Ryaguzov suspected of providing the killers with the journalist’s living address. Only the fact of Politkovskaya’s murder was considered to be proved by the jury, but their answer as regards the implication of the accused in the murder was unanimously negative.
The direct executor of the murder was, according to the investigation, the third of Makhmudov brothers – Rustam. His case was singled out as individual proceedings concurrently with his announcement in the international search.
Anna Politkovskaya was killed in the porch of her house in Moscow in October 2006. She gained popularity for her articles about the Chechen war and the situation in North Caucasus where she criticized the policy of Russian leadership.
