91 years have passed since the adoption of the state flag of Azerbaijan, APA reports.
The first decision of the government on the State Flag of Azerbaijan Republic was passed on June 24, 1918. According to that decision, Azerbaijan’s flag is red with a white crescent and an eight-pointed star on it. The first state flag of Azerbaijan differed from the flag of Turkey only for its eight-pointed star. The decision was passed when Azerbaijani government was functioning in Ganja.
The government moved to Baku after the Islamic army of the Caucasus and the units of Azerbaijan National Army liberated Baku from the Armenian-Russian occupation on September 15, and one of the first decisions of the independent Azerbaijani government was the adoption of the second decision on the national flag. The extract as of November 9, 1918, from the book of decisions of Azerbaijani government on the national flag, says:
1. The state flag of Azerbaijan Republic is the symbol of Azerbaijan’s sovereignty.
2. The national flag of the Republic of Azerbaijan is a right-angle figure, which consists of three equal horizontal bands colored blue on the top, red in the middle, and green on the bottom, with a white crescent and an eight-pointed star are centered in the red band on both faces. Comparison between width and length is 1:2. The crescent and eight-pointed star are inside the right-angle with comparison 3:4 of the sides. The diagonal is ½ of the width. The crescent consists the parts of two non-concentric circles. Diameter of big circle equals to width of the outside right-angle and small circle – to ¼ of the flag’s width. Center of the small circle is on left side of the geometric center of the flag in a distance equal to 1/60 of the flag’s width. The eight-pointed star is on right side of the crescent. Diameter of the outside circle of the star is 1/6 of the flag’s width, inside circle – 1/12.
3. The national flag of the Republic of Azerbaijan and its description should be same with the descriptions despite of measures.
The flag was changed after the collapse of the Azerbaijan People’s Republic. The three-color was approved as a national flag after the restoration of the independence of Azerbaijan
