The journalists are accused of deliberate insult of religious feelings of Muslims. On 5 February they retyped a January material of The Independent newspaper headlined “Why should I respect despotic religions?” It is not specified what penalty the journalists are threatened with. After the publication, the Muslim community of Calcutta held several meetings demanding to arrest the journalists. The meetings were peaceful at first, but grew into disorders by 9 February. The Muslims blocked the entrance to the edition’s building. The newspaper staff had to call the police to get to the job. The disorders ended after the journalists were arrested.
