Despite resolutions of int’l organizations, Karabakh conflict remains unresolved

Despite the resolutions of international organizations, the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict remains unresolved, Ali Hasanov, Azerbaijan’s deputy prime minister, chairman of the State Committee for Refugees and IDPs said.

He made the remarks during the meeting with OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs June 14.

Ali Hasanov told the co-chairs about the history of Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and said that the conflict reached its culmination during the Soviet period.

“Sumgayit events were organized by Mikhail Gorbachev in order to justify the subsequent events in Nagorno-Karabakh.”

“We meet not only with the officials, but also civilians and refugees,” Russian co-chair of OSCE Minsk Group Igor Popov said. “The issue of returning IDPs to their homeland is in our spotlight.”

The US co-chair James Warlick for his part, thanked Ali Hasanov for the meeting and congratulated the Azerbaijani government with the work carried out to improve the living conditions of IDPs.

OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs from the US (James Warlick), France (Pierre Andrieu) and Russia (Igor Popov), as well as the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office Personal Representative Andrzej Kasprzyk held a meeting on June 14 in Azerbaijan’s Absheron district for the IDPs from Azerbaijan’s occupied Zangilan district and Zangilan District secondary school No 33 in Baku.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the US are currently holding peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented the UN Security Council’s four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
