The heads of about 10 Azerbaijani NGOs voiced an interest this week in nominating themselves for the upcoming parliamentary elections. Azerbaijani Presidential State NGO Support Fund, MP Azay Guliyev made the statement at a roundtable discussion on the autumn elections today. “Some 10 NGO leaders have expressed an interest in nominating their candidacy on an individual basis,” he said.
Guliyev added several NGO leaders may try to form a coalition in the elections.
According to the law, NGOs cannot engage in political activities. However, their representatives may nominate their candidacy individually, he said.
Parliamentary elections are scheduled for Nov. 7. Previous legislative elections were held in November 2005. Parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan are held by the majority system in 125 electoral constituencies.
The election campaign kicks off next week./Trend/
