Argentine author Tomas Eloy Martinez dead

Tomas Eloy Martinez, one of the most famous contemporary Argentine authors, has died at age 75, the newspaper La Nacion reported Sunday.

Martinez wrote for the newspaper and also contributed to the New York Times and worked as a columnist for Spain’s El Pais newspaper, dpa reported.

Born in 1934 in Tucuman province, Martinez gained international fame for his novels, including The Memoirs of the General, Santa Evita, the Flight of the Queen and the The Tango Singer.

He also wrote screenplays, worked in television and was respected as a journalist in his homeland.

He lived the last part of his life in the United States, where he was a professor at Rutgers University in New Jersey and directed its Latin American studies programme.
