According to her father, his daughter said 10 February in a telephone talk with him that supposedly she had been arrested for buying a bottle of wine. She also said she would be set free soon and asked not to inform the USA authorities about the arrest. Saberi’s father didn’t appeal immediately to the US authorities as his daughter asked, however later, he had to do it, as there was no news from her. “We had to inform about that. Earlier, we hoped the matter would be settled without wide publicity”, – he said stressing he wasn’t aware of a true reason for his daughter’s arrest.
Sabery’s father said she, being half Iranian, came to Teheran six years ago as a correspondent, but later, when her accreditation term expired, she nevertheless remained to live in Iran, as she took keen interest in the country’s culture and engaged in researches there. The US State Department told the news agency they have no information about the journalist’s arrest.
