Some indulgences were introduced for foreign journalists on the threshold of the Beijing Olympic Games – 2008 and should have been abolished two months after they finish. However, the Chinese government has decided not to go back to the former standards.
In particular, reporters will not have to get permission for an interview with Chinese citizenry from the local administration. Nevertheless, access to Tibet will be still restricted for mass media representatives as before. In turn, the Club of Foreign Correspondents in China has welcomed the decision of the government, stressing however that it is necessary to ensure its observance at a local level.
